About

I've been a Yankee fan all my conscious life. This was not an inevitability. Many boys are introduced to the sports world and become fans of their teams via their father's influence, and I was a part of this pattern. In the early 90's when I was very young, my dad was a Mets fan (and had been a fan of National League baseball since he was a kid). There may still have been some fallout from their magical run in 1986 in those days. However, as the 90's progressed, the Mets began to "no longer hustle" as my father put it, which he hates above all things in sports. At the same time, the Yankees were beginning the process of building one of the great dynasties in the history of professional sports...and it was at that time that I became old enough to understand the basics of how the game works.

In 1996, I actually got to go on the field of the old Yankee Stadium. I received batting coaching from Chris Chambliss, pitching coaching from Mel Stottlemyer, and fielding coaching from Willie Randolph. We of course got to go to the game after that, and received some gifts including a bat. I still have the grass in a bag somewhere (I think). Of course, it was also that year that the Yankees won the World Series for the first time in 18 years.

We repeated the process on the field in 1997.

From that point on, I was a Yankee fan, and remained one.

I've been fortunate enough to have grown up in times of nearly unparalleled glory, and to witness the careers of all-time Yankee greats. But the time hasn't been without its hardships. 2004 was a particular low-point that I'll never forget, but in an ironic way the 2004 ALCS loss was...in a way, fun. Such is the enjoyment that comes from being a sports fan.

I'm not a religious fan. I don't watch every moment of every game. I have other things to do in life, and a somewhat limited attention span when it comes to watching games on TV. But I enjoy being a fan, I enjoy the team, and I love to see it.

What you will have here is a no-nonsense yet light-hearted view of the New York Yankees from a lifetime fan, though of a less-intense nature than the fabled Bleacher Creatures. Hope you enjoy your stay.
